How we calculate your result

Explanations & frequently asked questions

What is the difference between average and marginal tax rates?

The average rate is total estimated tax and statutory contributions divided by cash income. The marginal rate is an estimate of the income tax on the next dollar of ordinary taxable income and may change near surtax and health-premium boundaries.

Are capital gains taxed on the full amount?

In this model, one-half of net realized gains is included in taxable income. Special exemptions, losses, and rule changes are not modelled.

Can RRSP and FHSA deductions reduce my tax?

Generally, eligible deductible contributions reduce taxable income. Deduction limits and contribution room must be checked against your own CRA records.

Is mortgage interest deductible in Ontario?

Interest on a personal residence is generally not deductible; interest associated with qualifying income-producing borrowing may be deductible, subject to applicable conditions.

Are self-employment and dividend results exact?

No. Business-related CPP, expense eligibility, dividend credits and other special tax rules can materially change a final return. The model identifies simplified assumptions rather than representing these as filing-ready results.
